Where To Eat & Drink

San Antonio has a great food culture spanning the traditional Tex-Mex, Authentic Mexican and BBQ as well as great takes on the more universal French, Italian and American cuisines. There are more places than you will be able to squeeze in, but we wanted to give you some of our family favorites. All suggestions are in and around the Downtown area where you will be nesting. They are categorized by neighborhoods.

Southtown / King William

Old charm, new spirit–one of Texas' more eccentric neighborhoods just south of downtown known for its diverse community, art galleries, restaurants, and Victorian era homes. A 20 minute walk or easy taxi from the Downtown hotels and a good stomping ground for Friday night dinner.

The Monterey

Located in a converted old gas station with a great open patio for dining outside. Creative cuisine and cocktails, mid-century decor. Heaters and mexican blankets if it gets chilly. Super casual.

Liberty Bar

Located in a converted convent, this old favorite provides an eclectic menu, warm hospitality, and a good bar scene upstairs. The decor inside is rather sparse, so ask for a table outside. Open late.

Although it can be a bit touristy, there are some special gems we recommend.

Ocho

The restaurant at the Havana Hotel is rooted in the hotel's pan-Latin cultural influences.  Ocho offers inventive menus for breakfast (voted among the Best in Texas in 2011 by Texas Monthly Magazine), lunch, dinner and late night — to be served in-room, on the patio or in the upstairs lounge.

The Pearl Brewery

Once the largest brewery in Texas now a unique new piece of urban redevelopment along the banks of the San Antonio river.

We suggest carving out time to walk or river ferry here from the hotel. Have a margarita outside at La Gloria, then head to dine at one of the following restaurants below.

Il Sogno

A five-star cafe that features Italian fare found in the trattorias and osterias of Rome and Florence. They do not take reservations, so head here early to put your name down, then grab a drink at La Gloria or one of the other many bars within the Pearl while you wait. This is the famous when-Mia-sleeping pilled-Harry-first-dinner-with-the-parents spot.
